Leakage is one of the common failures of mechanical equipment. There are two main reasons for the leakage:
(1) As a result of mechanical processing, there must be various defects and shape and size deviations on the surface of mechanical products, so gaps will inevitably occur at the joints of mechanical parts;
(2) There is a pressure difference on both sides of the seal, and the working medium will leak through the gap.
Reducing or eliminating gaps is the main way to prevent leaks. The function of sealing is to seal the gap between the joint surfaces, isolate or cut off the leakage channel, increase the resistance in the leakage channel, or add a small working element in the channel to cause pressure on the leakage, and partially offset the pressure difference causing the leakage. Seals can be divided into two C.A.Tegories: static seals between relatively static joint surfaces and dynamic seals between relatively moving joint surfaces.
There are three main types of static seals: point seals, glue seals and contact seals. According to the working pressure, static seals can be divided into medium and low pressure static seals and high pressure static seals. Medium and low pressure static seals are usually made of softer materials and wider gaskets, while high pressure static seals use hard materials and metal gaskets with a narrow contact width.
Dynamic seals can be divided into two basic types: rotary seals and reciproC.A.Ting seals. According to whether the seal is in contact with the parts that move relative to it, it can be divided into contact seals and non-contact seals. Generally speaking, the sealing performance of the contact seal is good, but limited by friction and wear, it is suitable for the occasions where the linear velocity of the sealing surface is low. Non-contact seals have poor sealing properties and are suitable for higher speeds.
